TOPS Developmental Kindergarten provides five-year-old children the opportunity to explore a broad variety of educational experiences prior to entering kindergarten. We give equal priority to the physical, intellectual, creative, and social/emotional development of each child as they are accepted at their own unique level of growth.

The DK program is set within a nurturing environment emphasizing both community building and individualized activities. Through blocks, dramatic play centers, open-ended art materials and other fun-filled, hands-on activities.

The introduction of cognitive and academic skills does form a large part of our curriculum. Math, science and literacy activities are integrated into the projects with which we are involved. The essential skills are presented in a manner appropriate to the level of each child. Cues are taken from the child, and in this respect our classroom is a child-centered experience where each and every child succeeds.

Each month, we focus on a specific theme which serves as a skeletal structure from which the learning experiences and discussions unfold. In addition, we provide monthly field trips, computer experiences, and special weekly science programs. The program is Monday-Friday, 9:00 to noon.

Eligibility
Children must be age-eligible for kindergarten (5 years old by December 2) in order to qualify for the DK program. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the TOPS Director.

Parent Involvement
Parents of DK children are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the classroom. We need parents to drive on the monthly field trips. DK parents are required to work two 3-hour maintenance workdays per year and serve on either the Executive Board or on a parent committee. There are also fundraising events, parent education evenings and a back to school night which parents are encouraged to attend.
