Qualifications:

Educational Requirements: Minimum State requirements must be met at all times (A copy of the State regulations is available in the school office and in the Vice President Personnel's manual). All teachers must meet the 15 hour Health and Safety State requirement, including CPR. TOPS values continuing education and encourages all teachers to meet NAEYC accredidation standards. The following qualifications are strongly recommended.

Director: BS or BA in ECE or elementary education with early childhood education inclusion; the ability to obtain a California Child Center Permit; completion of Administration course in ECE; and work experience.

Teacher: BS or BA in ECE or elementary education credential with early childhood education inclusion; or BS or BA in another field plus the equivalent of a community college nursery school certificate (24 units of ECE).

Playgroup Teacher, Assistant Playgroup Teacher, and Head Substitute Teacher: Must meet State teaching requirements at a minimum.

Exceptions to TOPS Educational requirements for "Teacher" may be considererd at the Director's and Personel Committee's discretion. NAEYC and State standards must continue to be met at all times.

 

Our Staff:

Lorraine O’Kane, Director

Started at TOPS in 1998 as Two’s class teacher, then Art teacher and Playgroup Director.

TOPS Director since 2003.

Attended Chabot College and Cal State Hayward, earned an AA degree in Early Childhood Education and a Child Development Teacher Permit from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing from the state of California.

Has over 30 years of experience working with preschool age children and their families.

 

Emily Demir, Office Manager

TOPS Secretary since 1990

TOPS parent 1984-90, Board Member 1988-90

BA in Political Science from the University of Cincinnati

 

Doreen Dean, Two’s Teacher, Friday Director, Playgroup Director.

Started with TOPS as Outside Assistant Teacher January 2000, Outside Teacher April 2000, Two’s Teacher since September 2000.

Earned four Early Childhood Certificates at DVC, AA in Liberal Arts, AS in Early Childhood Education, and Associate Teacher Permit through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Currently working on Teacher’s Permit and Master Teacher Certificate at DVC. Plans to continue to an MS degree.

 

Kathy Beitch, Two’s Assistant, Playgroup Assistant

Two’s Assistant Teacher, and Playgroup Assistant at TOPS since 2008.

Received an AA degree in Business/Marketing from Diablo Valley College. Attended Sacramento State University.

Received Assistant Associate Teacher Certificate from State of California.

Worked in my own family daycare business from 2004-2008. Received accreditation from the National Association for Family Child Care, 2007.

Currently studying early childhood education at Los Medanos College.

 

Medha Nagnoor, Music Movement and Blocks Teacher

Started at TOPS in 2008 as Assistant Teacher, Blocks Music and Movement Teacher since 2009.

Masters degree in Commerce from India (equivalent to Bachelors in the US).

Earned 32 units Early Childhood Education at DVC and Teacher’s Permit from the State of California .

Worked as a paraprofessional in the Walnut Creek School District., 2007-08

Volunteers at children’s school, Vice President of Programs of PTA..

 

Claire Peterson, Science Teacher

TOPS Head Substitute and parent participation scheduler 2003-2004. Outside Assistant since 2004, Science Teacher since 2006.

Holds a BA in Communications from CSU, 20+ units of Early Childhood Education from DVC. Continues to study education.

Active community volunteer.

 

Rachel Wiley, Art Teacher, Playgroup Assistant

Started at TOPS in 2002 as Outside Aide, Two’s Assistant in 2004, Outside Assistant Teacher 2006. Art Teacher since 2006.

Majored in Chemistry at Laney Community College and Early Child Development classes at DVC, applying for the Associate Teacher Permit through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

 

Shannon Billeci, Outside Teacher, Playgroup Assistant

Started at TOPS as Outside Assistant Teacher in 2004, Outside Teacher since 2005.

Earned Early Childhood Education Certificate from DVC and Teacher Permit through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Received an AA in Liberal Arts, and AS in Early Childhood Education. Currently attending DVC and pursuing BA in Human Development.

 

Martha Luciani, Developmental Kindergarten Teacher

TOPS Head Substitute ’93-94, Assistant DK Teacher ’95-96, DK Teacher since 1996

Earned Early Childhood Education Certificate at DVC.

TOPS parent for four years and served on TOPS Board in ‘92-93.

 

Criss Hughes, Developmental Kindergarten Teacher

TOPS Art Aide in 1994, Head Substitute in 1995-97, as well as circle group teacher in ’97.  Outside Teacher ’98-99, DK Teacher since March 2000

Earned Early Childhood Education Certificate from DVC

 

Amanda Lyon, Assistant Teacher

First year at TOPS as an assistant teacher 2009

A.S. degree from DVC in Early Childhood Education, and staff member at DVC Lab School.

 

Joey McNaughton, Outside Assistant Teacher

TOPS Outside Assistant Teacher since 2008

Continuing to take Early Childhood Education courses at DVC, was awarded the Associate Teacher Permit through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and is applying for the Teacher’s Permit.

 

Carrie Rasmussen, Outside Assistant Teacher, Scheduler
